Where did all the Chinese go??

My niece in KL just emailed me, wishing us Happy Chinese New Year.

She also voiced her concern for her daugther who just started Standard One. Yes, yes, yes, I have a grandniece that is older than her uncle (my Aidan), heck, I have 5 grandnieces in fact. 3 from another 2 nephews. I am Yee Poh and Gu Poh... phwoa...!!

Anyway, she said that what her daughter is learning at the moment (ABC and writing) is what she has already done at 4 years old. Quote for quote, she said she's discouraged to know that out of the 224 Standard One pupils, only NINE are Chinese. That's freaking less than 5%!! She didn't know that Chinese parents do not send their kids to National schools anymore. She feels saddened by the fact, considering Malaysia is a multi-racial country. But it's a good consolation to know that her bubbly daughter took it all in stride and mix with anyone regardless. She even scored full marks recently, and managed to get placed into the next class. Good on you, Kay!

The teachers do not speak English. Yes, BM is the national language, but English is still the international language, and looking at it, Malaysia's current system doesn't seem to encourage children to have a good command in English. Isn't this a worrying state? I've told my niece when I was back last October, I am glad to be in Melbourne, and given the chance to choose again, it will still be here, for the sake of Aidan. There is less pressure, unlike friends I know who send their kids to Chinese school in Ipoh, only Year 2, and they are forced to carry a heavy backpack, and homework till midnight. This is unbelievable! School my time wasn't like that. And I didn't turn out too bad.... duh??

I do hope she'll be here soon, depending on how they plan for their migration. Aidan loves Kay and Yan. He'll have relatives to play with then.... hoping, waiting......

So, yeaa... can anyone tell me if there is any good primary school in Bangsar area? She didn't ask for it, but I thought I'd ask the mummy bloggers here for advice.

It is worrying. Dunno how this education system is going to turn out when Ashley starts Year One. Wish things are simpler just like during our time ;) School seem so much fun then. We turned out ok, eh?

Sorry, I don't know any good schools in Bangsar :)
