Not sharing

We just got home from a program that Aidan attended, and in the car he had requested for some Oreo cookies as snack. I said okay.

Back home, he wanted to change into his old, soft, raggy and thin tee with koala prints on it. I said he could wear that, but he also has to put on a thicker jumper. Tantrum session went on for fifteen minutes, part wailing, part crying in his room. I paid no attention.

He started kicking the bed. I went in and gave him a tight smack on his rear, and told him only to come out when he is quiet. He went all quiet within a minute, but didn't come out. Two minutes later I stood outside his room, and he immediately got down from his bed, eyes all red and puffy (poor thing!) and picked up his jumper from the floor, asking me wear it for him. Told him to wear it himself and he did.

Sat him facing me and told him that he needed to wear that because it was cold. It IS a cold and wet day!! Explained to him he needed to listen to me because he may catch a cold, and not just because I was demanding him to do so.

Everything fine, blablabla, requested for Oreo cookies. Had four left in the pack. He usually has three. I said the fourth is mine. On seeing that was the last, he wanted all four. I said no, that was mine. He said no. I said share. He went Ah-aah! and shook his head. I pouted and gave him all four, and started 'crying'. Remember he just got over a bout of crying session, so he was still quite emotional. Buried his head in my tummy and was very sad. I walked away, 'crying' and sat down, told him he could have everything. I don't want it anymore. He followed and tried to shove one Oreo into my mouth. I said no, and he said no even louder, forced the cookie into my mouth. On seeing me sad, he was willing to share.

Bad mummy, emotional blackmailing. I know I am not supposed to manipulate his feelings, especially when he is vulnerable, but I just don't know what overcame me. Only realized what I had done right after that, it's my turn now to feel guilty and ashamed of myself. He is okay now, playing and making noise again, but eyes still puffy. My boy is such a laid-back person and a forgiver. I am so blessed.
